"The teaching of the Bible has a vital bearing upon man's prosperity in all the relations of this life. It unfolds the principles that are the cornerstone of a nation's prosperity - principles with which is bound up the well-being of society, and which are the safeguard of the family - principles without which no man can attain usefulness, happiness, and honor in this life, or can hope to secure the future, immortal life."

Incomparable Love

Lovers, in truth, are people who love... not just on February 14, but all year long.

We cuddled up to review his Sabbath School lesson, SJ and I... our icy toes curling under the blanket.

We read again that timeless account in the gospel according to Luke. The one in chapter 10 about the generous gentleman, the Samaritan, who showered love on a battered, bloodied, stranger. Yes, you know the one.

On this, the eve of what is dubbed 'a day for lovers', it caused me to fall into deep contemplation. Contemplation about love... a principle that has at its core the most lofty ideals that one could aspire to. Patience, kindness, generosity, humility... just a few of the traits of this thing we call love. (1 Corinthians 13).

The Samaritan had it down. He had a million excuses he could have used. He could have just moved on up the road... after all, the priest did and they are leaders in the church! But I am glad He stopped his donkey and got down.

He left us an awesome example, and Jesus pointed us toward His own work on this earth when He told the story. You can see it now. How He came down to this battered, bloodied race, and brought us comfort, hope and a new lease on life. How He shunned the traditions and prejudices of His time, stepped out of His comfort zone and loved. Even the unlovable. Amazing, incomparable love.

Lovers, in truth, are people who love... not just on February 14, but all year long.

"Love your neighbour as yourself." - Luke 10 v. 27 (NIV)

We tried to put actions to the memory verse, and I tried getting SJ to cross his arms across his chest to symbolise 'love'... but he already had his own idea. "Love, Mommy?" he said... and opened his arms wide, closing in for a hug.

You know what? He got it right. Parents don't know everything.

Open your arms wide to someone new this Valentine's Day. Step out of your comfort zone and away from tradition. Give a gift to someone others ignore. Take the time to offer encouragement to one who needs it. Share a few minutes, a meal or a laugh.

It will be so worth it!
