Every Monday, one of my favourite bloggers hosts Make-Do Mondays, and this week I'm hopping in. Here is the point of Make-Do Mondays, in her own words:
At Make-Do Mondays, we discuss how we’re simplifying, downsizing, repurposing, buying used, and using what we’ve got. It’s a carnival you can visit to celebrate creative problem-solving, contentment, patience and ingenuity.
A few months ago, I started knitting with the help of my mom and some online resources. It was an opportunity to 'make-do' from the outset, since the needles I used were much older than I was. Fascinated by my new skill, I moved forward in an attempt to learn every possible technique.
I hit a snag, however, when I wanted to try cables and realised that I would need a cable needle (or something like it), so armed with a bent knitting needle - that I somehow inherited without its partner - I decided to find out if DH could solve this little problem. He whipped out his Leatherman... cut, filed, filed, and then some... and this was the result:

(I found the pattern for that headband HERE... and her photo is a lot better too... I am still 'making-do' with my webcam.) ;)
The remaining portion of the needle made a 'mini-DPN', which partners with the above 'cable needle' for knitting i-cords...

because I really like headbands... can you tell?

Note: 'Making do' is so central to life in Jamaica that I can hardly think of it as 'making do', but I will try to remember to post my snippets on Mondays. :)

It's so fun to see your post and your lovely headbands! My girls would love those--I may take up knitting just to try making some!
Also, I really like your point that making do is simply the way you live life in Jamaica. I think for some people, whether by personality, situation, or location, making do is the normal way of living.
I find sometimes that I'm a bit of an oddity living in a suburb in the United States, where people pop out and buy whatever they want at the Target or Wal-mart type store. That's an easy, inexpensive solution for people with a lot of resources.
The economy here has people starting to think differently, so it's helpful to get tips from people who are doing it.
As for the cell phone--I don't think I made it clear enough that I consider it a privilege to have a cell phone. Only by comparing my old one to my friends' fancy ones does it make mine look like a make-do solution. Forgive me if that sounded like a rich, spoiled American's post!
LOL! You didn't sound spoiled at all... I totally understood your point. I know people who would have thrown it out and bought another... they may be the 'oddities'.
Frugal is the new cool. B-)
I take a large. big headed.
LOL! :D
I'm big headed too, a large in any color is fine!
When are you and Yolanda both going to come and teach me to knit? I would love to learn.
Funny you mention Yolanda... she is my inspiration. :D I used these resources.
