Onion Experiment

One month ago I posted a photo here of what happens when you take a full grown onion from your kitchen and stick it in the dirt. (Yes, I'm guilty of playing with Tumblr) :)

When hubby stuck the 'sprouting' onion in our garden, neither of us knew what to expect... and any expectation we dreamed up ran along the lines of 'onion morphing into green onions'. :D

At any rate, we were prepared to wait it out.

And since I know at least one gardening enthusiast who will be interested in this experiment, I thought I would share a progress report of sorts here. :)

Here we go:

March 2011

For two weeks before this photo (in February) there was what appeared to be a scab on this 'leaf'. Hubby and I concluded that our onion had contracted a disease and we both tried removing the scab in question. For some strange reason, this turned out to be an exercise in futility.

God pitied us in our ignorance. Ooooh boy! Look at the beauty we would have missed!

April

So, by now we had formulated a theory.... the flowering portion would give way to seed pods which we could then plant.

The onion apparently has other ideas, because this what I saw at the beginning of this week when the flowers dried up and fell away.

May 2011

Hmmm... those do not look like any seed pods I have ever seen. Surely it is not going to put out small oinions on top of that stalk?!

Could someone dispense some knowledge here? Google has failed me. :)
